A mother, Elisabet Selis, wrote this letter to her son, Bernard, a dancer in a French theatre troupe in The Hague. She knows that he intends to return to the Southern Netherlands for Easter, which was when the artists would sign their new contracts, and asks that he write her before leaving The Hague and upon arriving in Antwerp. She warns him not to travel by sea, because the wind can be very fierce around Easter.

Elisabet concludes the letter by urging her son to live his life in fear of God and to embrace a repentant life. It is clear that she is not very happy that he chose a career on stage.
