Family and business often go hand in hand. In Paris, Gabriel Bertras wrote this short letter to his brother in The Hague, thanking him for sending money. It appears that both brothers were active in the textile trade, because Gabriel promises to send a shirt and a pattern for lace. In addition to business matters, the letter contains the news that Gabriel’s wife is expecting a child and that everyone is healthy and happy.

The fact that this family was rather well off is apparent from the materials used: the fine paper bears a triple seal covered in gold leaf.
